Outrigger beams and platform bearers of these scaffolds must be made of structural grade metal. In addition, these scaffolds have strict rules regarding: A detailed inspection of beams and bearers must be made before installation, with inspections repeated at intervals of no more than 30 days during scaffold use. Two-point suspension scaffolds must also have compliant: Hangers must have supports for guard rails, intermediate rails, and toeboards and be able to sustain four times the maximum rated load. Two-point suspension scaffold platforms must be between 20 and 32 inches in width, of sufficient size to properly fit the hangers, and securely fastened by U-bolts which pass around the hangers. Section 23-5.9 - Two-Point Suspension Scaffolds The planking of all platforms must overlap and either be nailed in place or otherwise secured against displacement. Window cleaners' anchors cannot be used for tie-ins. Each suspended scaffold must be tied to the structure at every working level. Fiber rope must not be used on hoisting drums. At least four turns of the suspension wire rope shall remain on the drum at all times, and the end of the rope must be adequately secured to the drum. ![]() All manual or power-operated hoisting machines used for suspended scaffolds (other than block and tackle) must be approved. Anyone who applies horizontal force to the platform while located more than 10 feet above the ground must use an approved safety belt with a lifeline. A designated person must directly supervise the installation and horizontal change in position of a suspended scaffold. No parapet, curtain wall, or similar part of a structure may be used to support the roof hooks or irons of a suspended scaffold unless certified as safe by a licensed professional engineer in the State of New York. Load-carrying parts must be inspected for adequacy of anchorage and support before the scaffold is installed. 12 § 23-5.8 sets forth the following guidelines. The Department of Labor has created specific construction safety rules in Part 23 of the New York Industrial Code to protect people employed in construction, demolition, or excavation work. NY Labor Law 241 requires owners and contractors to make construction sites as safe as possible for workers. Under Section 241(6), owners and contractors must comply with any rules made by the Commissioner of the Department of Labor to carry out the provisions of the law. Protection for Workers on Suspended Scaffolds Under the NY Industrial Code Employers and site owners who don’t adhere to these regulations could be liable for negligence and pain and suffering damages in an injury claim. In addition to OSHA regulations and state-mandated safety laws for workers on scaffolds, the New York Industrial Code has specific provisions to protect employees from falls on construction sites.

Witches were often viewed as dangerous sorceresses or sorcerers in a pact with the Devil, capable of causing harm through black magic. By the early modern period, major witch hunts began to take place, partly fueled by religious tensions, societal anxieties, and economic upheaval. In the Middle Ages, accusations of heresy and devil worship grew more prevalent. ![]() Ancient Rome, then a pagan society, had laws against harmful magic. The roots of European witchcraft trace back to classical antiquity when concepts of magic and religion were closely related, and society closely integrated magic and supernatural beliefs. That way, the previous large and unified empire of Charlemagne became fragmented, and feudalism became stronger and stronger.European witchcraft is a multifaceted historical and cultural phenomenon that unfolded over centuries, leaving a mark on the continent's social, religious, and legal landscapes. The kings once again had to ask for help to different nobles, rewarding them with more and more land. ![]() Also, from the ninth century onwards, there were heavy invasions in Europe, mainly by the vikings, the muslims and the slavic peoples of the east. These grandsons of Charlemagne needed to ask for the help of different nobles to advance their objectives, and after the wars, rewarded them with lands of their own kingdoms because of their loyalty. The grandsons of Charlemagne fought one another to be the most powerful lord in Europe, ending in the division of the Carolingian empire by the treaty of Verdun in 843 a.d. However, once he died, his son had many problems that helped the feudal system to spread through Europe. Charlemagne managed to create a large and unified empire, somewhat opposed to the feudal system. In a feudal state, the territory is heavily fractured, the power being dispersed among several lords of different weight in political and militar matters. The baron or king might give commands, but these were not laws and if he exacted more than custom sanctioned he would be frustrated by universal resistance." As Will Durant writes in The Story of Civilization, "the community itself was therefore the chief source of law. When the shared values of the community were broken, the peasants rejected the system and revolted. There were, for example, biblical prohibitions against charging interest that were enforced during this period. Prices were established by a sense of what was just. This system ensured that the lord had the right to rule and that the poor farmers were entitled to his protection. A moral economy-where cultural or political intervention limits market prices or freedom of contract-was enforced by the teachings of the church. The lord of the manor-who set the terms of the rent agreement-was also usually the local legal authority. There was no standard rent in the Middle Ages, and tenant farmers had few ways to contest the rent demanded of them. The amount and type of payment was not influenced by market forces it was coercive, or forced. This could be a portion of the harvest, days of labor in the lord's own fields-called the demesne-or money. Tenant farmers-that is, people who didn't own the land they worked-owed some kind of payment to their landlords. For our purposes, the important thing is that those lands were cultivated with a combination of free and unfree labor-let's talk about how that came to be. ![]() Rather than diving into the arguments of how to organize this history, let's discuss some common threads about those estates. Modern historians dispute whether or not it's useful to lump together the management of these estates in that way. Medieval economies were largely based around the operations of those landed estates. Though these arrangements could range widely in style, they were lumped together under the label of feudalism, from the Medieval Latin term feudum referring to a landed estate. Seventeenth-century historians and lawyers who studied the Middle Ages decided to give a common name to the diverse landowner-tenant arrangements that existed in northwest Europe during the Middle Ages, starting with the collapse of Charlemagne's empire in the late ninth century and declining after the Black Plague and the Peasant Revolt in the fourteenth century. The term feudal is a tricky one, because few scholars can quite agree on what it means these days. ![]() ![]() For the rest of the family, this is a friendly reminder to apply an adequate amount. The best way to protect babies from the sun is to keep them in the shade as much as possible, dress them in protective clothing, a hat with a brim and sunglasses. Notable products include the Natural Sunscreen Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 30 lotion and spray. Caribbean Sols line includes various biodegradable sunscreen lotions, sprays, and skin-healing products. Mineral sunscreens use minerals like zinc oxide as their active protective ingredient, while chemical formulations usually use a chemical called Oxybenzone ( ranked as a high health concern hazard by EWG). This Orlando-based company has provided all-natural sunscreen products for more than a decade. You should also know the distinction between chemical and mineral sunscreens – which is basically just how it sounds. So, you’ll notice that warning on all sunscreen labels. However, the FDA hasn't caught up with this new recommendation and still requires all sunscreen labels to state that it is only safe for babies over six months. We were advised to just cover the little bundles up and keep them out of the sun – which is still good guidance!īut inevitably some precious baby parts will be exposed to everyday rays, and in 2018, the American Academy of Pediatrics said when adequate clothing and shade are not available, parents CAN apply a minimal amount of sunscreen with at least 15 SPF on infants under six months to small areas, such as the infant's face and the back of the hands. Up until just last year, the common medical knowledge was that babies should not wear sunscreen before six months of age. ![]() It's the recommendation you see on all sunscreen labels, but what does it really mean?
