Simone Strasser from Alsace (played by Krieps) appears blissfully unaware of any of this, however. Nine months after the sinking of the U-96 – the submarine we remember from the cinema version – the Brits are using the Enigma encryption machine to make life hell for Germany’s Nazi regime and have already sunk twelve subs in short order. The plot of this opulent production is based on the novels “Das Boot” and “Die Festung” by Lothar-Günther Buchheim and begins in the fall of 1942. However, unlike the legendary cinema version, which made stars out of actors such as Jürgen Prochnow, Herbert Grönemeyer, and Uwe Ochsenknecht, this eight-part series interweaves the on-board battle for survival with a tale of espionage linked to the French resistance. The series of the same name, for which Bavaria Fiction, Sky Deutschland, and Sonar Entertainment paid around 27 million euros, also offers the greatest possible suspense in the smallest possible space and the relentless “ping” of the sonar. Nothing can bring movie fans out in more chilling goosebumps than the clanging “ping” of a depth sounder. In his 1981 masterpiece “Das Boot”, which was nominated for six Oscars, the director Wolfgang Petersen depicted a submarine crew in a cold sweat and hypnotized as they stare in terror at the depth gauge, listening out for sounds from the ocean. And this, just like in its nail-biting predecessor, is a real adrenaline rush. Where Wolfgang Petersen’s cinematic milestone of the same name focused on the fate of a submarine crew, however, this time it is not only hostile Navy personnel but also the Gestapo and the French resistance who are battling with every means at their disposal to gain the upper hand. I like Feyenoord’s fixture in Matchday 1 but if I manage to free up £0.5m-£1.0m from another spot, then I’d probably switch the Dutchman with Jules Kounde/David Alaba, who play for teams that I tend to trust more defensively. Not really the thing for landlubbers: the series “Das Boot” is a brutally honest portrayal of the unrelenting horrors of the Second World War. Doubling up on City with Nathan Ake seems my preferred route for now but things could change if we get any leaked line-ups for Manchester City, as going with the likes of Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez or Jeremy Doku offers that special explosiveness.Īs for my last defender, Lutsharel Geertruida is currently occupying that slot simply due to budget constraints. In defence, I believe Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo and Giovanni Di Lorenzo are locked in my team. The other two choices that I like are Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen (a bit expensive for my liking) and Yann Sommer, who also comes in at £4.5m and plays for an in-form Inter side. Both have a decent chance of keeping a clean sheet in Matchday 1. In goal, I’m currently sitting with Janis Blaswich and Marko Dmitrovic, both priced at £4.5m. Although I usually prefer to go Limitless in Matchday 2, I’ve covered in my last article the reasons behind changing my chip strategy this season and the fact that I’ll be targeting Matchday 4 with that powerful chip due to its high upside with the fixtures. I’m probably 80% in favour of using the Wildcard then, rather than the Limitless. CHIP STRATEGYįirst of all, you must be aware that my team is for Matchday 1 only as I will be definitely using a chip come Matchday 2. We are just a few hours away from the first kick-off and as promised, I will be going through my current draft, anticipated chip strategy, and my last-minute thoughts and potential changes to my team.
